The Blues, winless knew they had to secure victory or fave the real possibility of the title slipping away already in what was an enthralling encounter between the two teams in a match which was also laden with errors and yellow and red cards there were a total of four. The red given to No 8 Hoskins Sotutu for a shoulder-on-head contact the most controversial.
The game as changeable as the Wellington winds swirling inside the cake tin changed swung momentum throughout until a double-whammy delivered by Sotutu and right wing Mark Tele’a in the final 12 minutes gave the Blues some much needed breathing space and it was Mark Tele'a who provided the a moment of magic which began about 70m downfield when Beauden Barrett, who moved from fullback to No 10 late in the game and had a massive impact, ran the ball back and when possession eventually found its way into the hands of Tele’a, who proceeded to sprint 40m downfield and brilliantly evade a beat a defender with a linking run to score a sublime try in the corner.
Amid all the games madness, the Hurricanes playmaker Harry Godfrey was calm and composed. The young first five-eighth, who shifted to fullback late in the game, bagged a total of 24 points; he scored a try, slotted five penalties and two conversions. The best of which came after Godfrey collected a loose ball from the Blues and proceeded to superbly drive his way to the tryline before diving over infront of the Hurricanes faithful.
The game itself was enthralling, and loaded with bizarre moments, errors and ill-discipline, however it was compelling throughout as the reigning champions got off the mark much to the relief of their players and coaching staff.
