New Zealand produced a dominant performance to comprehensively beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets on a blustery day in the capital in ever changing conditions at the Basin Reserve.
Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy struck early for the Black Caps before Mitchell Santner ran out Mendis. At the end of 10 overs, Sri Lanka were 23 for four however Avishka Fernando and Janith Liyanage responded well in challenging conditions in the capital to set up an 87-run partnership. Fernando scoring 56 off 63 balls and Liyanage 36 off 54. After that Wanindu Hasaranga (35 off 33) to get them to 178. His partnership of 48 with Chamindu Wickramasinghe (22 off 42) was the second highest of the innings.
Henry finished with four for 19 off his 10 overs, while Duffy took two for 39 off 8.4 overs. Nathan Smith chipped in with two for 43, while Mitchell Santner was on point with his spinners taking one wicket for 27 off his seven overs.
The Blackcaps were able to avoid the early innings problems experienced by Sri Lanka, with Will Young and Rachin Ravindra combined well in a 93-run partnership before Ravindra mistimed a shot one and was caught on 45. Will Young continued on and rarely looked troubled and went on to combine well with Mark Chapman to set up a partnership of 29 to win the first test.
